The second movement, in the key of E-flat major, is a scherzo and trio by design with elements of sonata form in terms of developmental material and modulations. The main theme of this movement is presented in a bright tonality that differs greatly from the tonality of the first movement. The B section of the second movement presents new material and explores various keys while retaining the same melodic and rhythmic ideas. This section is presented in the style of a waltz and its typical ternary form begins in the subdominant key – A-flat major. However, like the development section of the sonata form, various keys are explored, only without developing the theme. The movement ends with a restatement of the A section with little to no changes, save for the lack of the subdominant modulation.
